Google Maps has historically been crippled in Korea — no real driving, walking or transit navigation. Korea approved Google's map-data export on 27 February 2026, with service expected to normalise within six months; whether it has actually gone live is unconfirmed. Plan as if it hasn't: install Naver Map, the highest-satisfaction app in the official tourist survey, and treat anything Google tells you on the ground as a suggestion.

Setting up Naver Map as a foreigner, in five minutes
SetupInstall Naver Map before you fly, open Settings and switch the language to English — the interface, search and turn-by-turn all follow. You don't need a Naver account to navigate. Save your hotel the moment you book it, and keep its Hangul name handy (every location on this site carries one) for taxi drivers and address searches that ignore the romanised spelling.
One 2026 wrinkle worth knowing: since July 2026 Naver's booking system has a 'Foreigner Setting' that lets restaurants block reservations from foreign accounts. If a booking tab won't open for you, it's not your phone — it's policy. The fallbacks, in order: CatchTable (Busan bookings up 290% in H1 2026, with waitlists running 6× reservations at the hot places), a phone call, or walking in at open. What Google Maps is still genuinely good for
Credit where dueFrom your sofa at home, Google renders Korea fine — which is why the Directions buttons across this site point there deliberately: they're for planning the trip, not walking it. Google's reviews and photos also remain useful for a second opinion on what's worth your time.
And the situation genuinely may be changing: the 27 February 2026 export approval was the real, decades-in-the-making unlock, with normalisation expected 'within six months'. If you're reading this late in 2026, test Google's walking directions on day one — just don't build the trip on the assumption. Naver costs you nothing but one install.
